The 1997 SCS Western MultiConference brings several conferences together, providing a variety of formats for the presentation and learning of different aspects of simulation and simulators. In addition to the conferences, featured speakers, vendor exhibits, formal seminars, administrative meetings, and informal gatherings provide opportunities for participants and attendees to meet diverse individual and corporate objectives.

Venue Information

We hope to see you in the "Valley of the Sun" for WMC'97 in Phoenix, where you can expect 60+ degree weather and a host of memorable activities. The valley is surrounded by mountain ranges, clear cool lakes, and world class resorts. Typical outdoor activities include golfing at one of Phoenix's spectacular courses, hot air balloon rides, horseback riding, and hiking. Take a day trip to the Grand Canyon, the ancient Indian ruins of Montezuma Castle National Monument, the red rocks of Sedona; visit a ghost town, or shop in famous old-town Scottsdale. The Phoenix area also hosts a variety of theatrical productions, art exhibits, and festivals.

Professional Development Seminar

Sunday, January 12
Registration Cost: $175 early, $200 late
(separate from Conference Registration Fee)

Introduction to VRML 2.0 (Virtual Reality Modeling Language)

Speaker: David R. Nadeau, San Diego Supercomputer Center, U.S.A.

VRML (the Virtual Reality Modeling Language) has emerged as the de facto standard for describing 3-D shapes and scenery on the World Wide Web. VRML's technology has very broad applicability, including web-based entertainment, distributed visualization, 3-D user interfaces to remote web resources, 3-D collaborative environments, interactive simulations for education, virtual museums, virtual retail spaces, and more. VRML is a key technology shaping the future of the web.

Participants in this professional development seminar will learn how to use VRML (the Virtual Reality Modeling Language) to author their own 3-D virtual environments on the World Wide Web. Participants will learn the syntax of VRML, typical usage patterns, ways of avoiding common mistakes, and tricks and techniques for increasing performance and realism. Seminar live examples will illustrate the use of VRML in educational, scientific, and simulation contexts.

Intended Audience: This course is intended for those persons interested in authoring their own virtual environments on the web using VRML.

Format: Full day (6 hours), lecture style with numerous on-line examples.

Biography: Dave Nadeau is a staff researcher at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), specializes in scientific visualization and virtual reality, and heads up SDSC's VRML research group. He is the author of technical papers on graphics and VRML, is a co-author of two books on VRML ( The VRML Sourcebook, and The VRML 2.0 Sourcebook), and authors a column on VRML for Netscape World magazine. Dave has taught courses on VRML, including those at SIGGRAPH'96 and WebNet'96. Dave is the founder and lead librarian for The VRML Repository, the principal Web site on VRML. He was a co-chair for the VRML Behavior Workshop in October 1995, and the VRML'95 conference in December 1995, and is on the program committee for the forthcoming VRML'97 conference in February 1997.

Registration Fee (includes handouts): $175 early, $200 late. Early registration is strongly recommended. For a detailed syllabus of this course, click here.

Tucson Bus Tour

Sunday, January 12
Registration Cost: $80
(separate from Conference Registration Fee)

Visit to Biosphere 2 and Kitt Peak National Observatory

You are invited to join a bus tour leaving Phoenix at approximately 8 a.m. and heading south toward Tucson. The itinerary starts with a two-hour visit of Biosphere 2, the largest closed-ecology system on this planet. You will be taken on a guided tour inside the closed ecosystem (not normally open to the public). Following lunch in a Mexican restaurant in Tucson (the U.S. capital of Mexican food!), the tour continues to Kitt Peak National Observatory, one of the most renowned astronomical sites in the world offering more than 20 different instruments. A guided visit of the Wyn telescope, the newest instrument on the mountain (not normally open to the public), will make this visit special. The tour ends at approximately 7 p.m. at the Sheraton-Crescent Hotel. Attendance is limited to 50 persons due to limitations imposed by Biosphere 2. Early registration is recommended. The cost of $80 per person includes transportation, fees, lunch, and beverages.

ASU Engineering Department Tour

Monday, January 13

Visit to Engineering Centers at Arizona State University

You are invited to join us at WMC'97 for our tour to ASU Laboratories. ASU has recently been designated as a Research 1 institution. Among the outstanding labs at ASU are the PRISM lab (stereo modeling), the SEM Clean Room lab, the Ion Beam lab, the Fluid Dynamics lab, the BioTechnology Techniques lab, the Environmental Engineering labs, the Wind Tunnel, and the Computer-Aided Geometric Design lab.

Social Event

Tuesday, January 14
Registration Cost: $40
(separate from Conference Registration Fee)

Evening at the Red River Opry

You are invited to join us for an authentic, mouth-watering, belly-filling cowboy cookout, followed by the dynamic entertainers of the Red River Opry in a spectacular tribute to American music.
